Oaktone Origins

Rooted in Worship

From 2008 to 2024, I served at Island ECC in Hong Kong as the Director of Worship and Atmosphere. This English-speaking church holds up to 10 service times each Sunday in a hi-rise office building on 3 floors with as many as 5 bands every Sunday. It's one of the most unique church setups I've ever seen!

As a worship leader using backing tracks while leading worship, I kept running into the same problem—I needed a way to control my tracks without having to keep my laptop beside me. I tried everything on the market, but nothing gave me the confidence to focus on leading worship instead of worrying about my gear. And nothing existed that made it easy to allow all three floors to use those backing tracks, too.

That frustration led me to build my own solution—a MIDI controller designed specifically for musicians like me. It was my first step into electronics design, and the moment I started using it, I knew it was something special. After showing my custom MIDI foot pedal to a few people in the live music industry, the need for products like this was clear.

This first prototype became the Oakboard Floor Vista, a device that allows navigation of your set list in Ableton Live directly on your foot pedal and away from your computer. I didn't know it at the time, but it would quickly lead to 2 other hardware MIDI controllers and become the foundation of Oaktone.

I believe excellence honors God (1 Corinthians 10:31), so Oaktone works hard to create tools that are reliable, beautifully designed, and intuitive—so you can focus on what really matters: leading worship and creating moments of encounter. If you're looking for a better way to control your tracks onstage, I’d love to connect. Lead without
Distractions

Oakboard Floor Vista

Used in churches around the world, Oakboard Floor Vista is an ultra-reliable, rugged MIDI controller designed to give worship leaders and music directors:

  1. Confidence about where they are in the worship service flow
  2. An intuitive interface that shows the name of your songs without needing to have a computer right next to you
  3. A discreet way to improve the sound quality of your services without distracting from the moment

It's low friction and plug-n-play, but can be customized for those who need it. Floor Vista is a class compliant MIDI controller that works with any DAW or iPad application, but to see your songs on the bright OLED display, you currently need to use Ableton Live with Taz, AbleSet, or the beta of Setlist 3.72.

We know the reliability and durability of mission-critical tech is one of the most important aspects of live music. We kept this in mind when designing the Oakboard family of MIDI controllers, so you can be more confident leading your services.
